South Side High School student, Anna Pickens, received the Jefferson Award for Public Service on Wednesday, September 23, 2009 in the Library at the school.   There were many distinguished guests attending the awards ceremony.  Among the guests were Superintendent Nancy Zambito; Senator Lowe Finney; State Representative Jimmy Eldridge, Madison County Mayor Jimmy Harris; City Councilman, Maurice Hayes; new school board member, Bill Baxter; board member, Becky Gordon; Principal Jimmy Arnold; Assistant Principal, Anita Tucker; Student advisor, Susan Mauney; parents, Gary and Paula Pickens.  Dee Rives, retired school teacher and long time family friend also attended the ceremony along with South Side High School's media department, the school's student leaders along with many other students, faculty and friends.  Jackson-Madison County School System is proud of Anna for being selected to receive this award.  Jackson-Madison County School System has partnered with the Jefferson Awards for Public Service program to implement this program in all of the high schools in the system. The Jefferson Awards program began with 9 schools and now serves 47 schools throughout the United States.
