Liberty Air Force Junior ROTC receives Jefferson Award

Ashlyn Jones, 10th grade, Flight Commander receives the Jefferson Award from Cassandra Williams

On Wednesday, November 4, 2009, the Liberty Junior ROTC unit, received a surprise!  Based on the unit's outstanding accomplishments and community service projects, they were nominated by one of the teachers in the school.

This group of students has logged in over 1500 hours of community service last year.  This year they are off to a great start with over 500 community service  hours.  Along with these accomplishments, they have raised and donated $2800 to benefit local and regional charities.  Every year, this group hosts a car show for St. Jude's Children's Hospital.  As of last year, they raised a total of $2300!  But, their services don't end yet!  They also visit the Humboldt, TN Veterans nursing home twice a year and help with the flag dedication and bring the residents flags.

The most outstanding of these accomplishments is the attainment of the 2008-2009 Distinguished Unit Award.  Only 93 out of 850 groups received this honor.  This recognized outstanding service to the school and the community.

The Jefferson Award was presented to the 2nd block of Junior ROTC students by Mrs. Cassandra Williams, 2nd Block statistics class, which has several of Liberty's student ambassadors in the class.

The Air Force Junior ROTC unit has a very busy schedule for the next few weeks.  There are several events that are planned such as cleaning the Civil War Cemetery in Jackson, organizing a toy drive for the Carl Perkins Child Abuse Center, carolling at the West Tennessee Healthcare-Pediatrics Unit.  The unit also plans to do Troop Support packages for military personnel currently  serving.  The unit will also go to the Rotary Club, the Railroad Museum, the VA home in Humboldt, and the Jackson Meadows Nursing Home.  The unit consists of approximately 45 students.

The unit is lead by Chief Wally Littrell and Scott Parkhurst.
