Dr. Marlon King

Dr. Marlon King was named superintendent of the Jackson-Madison County School System in June of 2020. His desire to create meaningful collaboration with community partners in higher education; city and county government; manufacturing/industry; faith, and service-minded non-profits, have resulted in a number of transformational connections for students, employees, and families in Jackson-Madison County. Building on the Local Options and Opportunities platform that pairs JMCSS students with job experience within local industries, Dr. King worked with local healthcare leaders to expand work-based learning opportunities to include West Tennessee Healthcare, our county’s largest employer, and Jackson Energy Authority (JEA). Dr. King’s decades-long transformational leadership experience as a superintendent, which includes notable tenures in Haywood County and Fayette County, provided him with an impactful context and approach in Madison County.

Dr. King led the transformational process in both Haywood and Fayette Schools, in which they moved from Level 1 systems to becoming a Level 5 designation in student growth as prescribed by the Tennessee Department of Education. The unanimous vote by the Madison County Commission in 2022 to provide funding for a new Pope School (Prek-8) was proof of his years-long efforts to build relational capital with county legislators. Dr. King proved to value people over policy when he provided a raise and a pair of bonuses for all employees, certified and non-certified, from 2020-2022. Most recently, Dr. King presented a $6.2 million Investment Progression Plan for every employee that the Board unanimously approved. Additionally, his implementation of weekly leadership meetings to bring every school principal to the decision table has improved climate, communication, and culture on all campuses. The result of these efforts has led to 16 JMCSS schools being designated Level 4 or Level 5 schools by the Tennessee Department of Education. These improvements are only the beginning. Stay tuned.

A graduate of the University of Mississippi, Dr. King, his wife, a middle school teacher, and their son, a student in JMCSS, reside in Jackson, Tennessee.
