Kevin Alexander was elected to the school board on August 4, 2016. He currently serves as the Minister of Children and Youth at Hillcrest Baptist Church. He and his wife Crystal have two children: Madison, a graduate of North Side High School, and Dakota, who attends East Elementary. 

  

Kevin is a lifelong resident of Jackson and attended Nova, East, North Side Junior High, and graduated from North Side High School in 1989. He then enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served for four years in the aviation field aboard the U.S.S. Independence stationed in Japan.

School Board Vice-Chair

 

Ms. Janice Hampton was elected to the board in 2012. She is currently in her second term. As for why she first decided to run, Hampton said, "I want to see every student succeed in becoming college, career, and workforce ready."

 

Hampton served as Vice Chairman of the Board in 2017-2018 and was elected to serve in that role again for 2018-2019. In 2018, she was also elected as an At-Large Member for the Tennessee School Board Association. She has served on several committees within the JMCSS School Board. 

 

Hampton is a product of the district, attending Lincoln, North Parkway Junior High, and Jackson Central-Merry. The same can be said for her siblings, children, grandchildren, and other family members - all students of JMCSS.

 

Hampton has worked for the Jackson-Madison County Juvenile Court System for more than 24 years. Previously she has taught head start and served as an instructor at Madison Business School and West Tennessee Business College. She holds degrees from Lane College and Freed-Hardeman University.

School Board Parliamentarian

 

Shannon Stewart was born and raised in Paducah, Kentucky where her mom worked as a public school educator and her father continued the family business of car sales. She moved to Jackson, TN in the Fall of 1994 to attend Union University. While at Union, Shannon received a degree in Communications/Public Relations. At that time, Shannon met her husband Jonathan, of Tupelo, MS. Shannon and Jonathan have been married 17 years and have four beautiful daughters. They are members of All Saints Anglican Church in Jackson.

 

Shannon became a Madison County CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) volunteer in 2005, serving the organization in various ways (as a volunteer, Volunteer Coordinator, Board Member, and Executive Director) from 2005 until she “retired” in early 2016 to stay at home with her daughters.

 

Shannon is a 2012 graduate of Leadership Jackson. She has served on the Madison County Juvenile Court Services Advisory Board, the Pathways Youth Recovery Services board, and is a former member of the Madison County Imagination Library Board. Shannon is also a former member of the Board of Regents at Union University, and is a frequent volunteer at the RIFA soup kitchen and with Area Relief Ministries in Jackson. She is an avid reader, a huge University of Kentucky basketball fan, a University of Alabama football fan (only by marriage), and enjoys a good Kentucky bourbon and even better coffee.

 

Her experience as the child of a public educator, as well as her own public education, drive her desire to reinvest in the education system of Jackson-Madison County Schools for the benefit of the children of the area and the broader community.

School Board Tennessee Legislative Network (TLN) Representative

 

James 'Pete' Johnson was born and raised in Madison County by parents who knew the value of education and had the expectation that all eight of their children graduate from high school and beyond. He is a product of JMCSS, attending Denmark Elementary, West Junior High, and West Sr. High School along with all his siblings and children. He graduated and received a Bachelor's degree of Business Administration from Lambuth College and an MBA from Union University. 

 

James currently works for CORECIVIC in Whiteville, TN as the Business Manager, and previously worked for Jackson Energy Authority as Manager of Purchasing and Stores along with coordinating the Local Small Business Diversity Program for twelve years.

 

Additionally, he has served as a member of the Brownsville Exchange Club, past president of the Jackson Exchange Club, a member and past president of the Tennessee District Exchange Clubs, a member of the Carl Perkins Child Abuse Prevention Center's Board of Directors and past chairman of the board. He is also a past member of the board of directors of JACOA and served as board chair. In addition, he is a member of the Leadership Jackson Alumni Association and past board member.

 

Mr. Johnson attends the New St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church and serves on the Board of Deacons and as a Sunday School teacher.

Wayne was elected to the School Board in August of 2016. He is a graduate of the district, attending Parkview, Jackson Junior High and Jackson Central-Merry. Both of his daughters are graduates of Madison Academic, and one currently works in the district as does his wife, Sherry. 

 

Arnold is a retired firefighter with the Jackson Fire Department and continues to hold many certifications and licenses in the field. He currently works as Medical Reserve Coordinator for the JMC Regional Health Department and serves as the SWAT Medic for the Madison Co. Sheriff's Office SWAT Unit. He is currently a member of the Jackson Municipal Regional Planning Commission and the Historic Zoning Commission for Jackson, serving as Vice Chairman for both. 

 

Arnold is a member of the board's Technology Committee, Education Vision Committee and is chairman of the Budget Committee. He said giving voice to those in his community is why he serves on the board and is hopeful for the future.

Dorothy "Doris" Black is a retired public school teacher with over 38 years experience. Her background includes classroom teaching, teacher coaching and mentoring, new teacher Induction, and administration. She was voted "Teacher Of The Year" twice during her career serving in Arkansas and Wisconsin. She has two sisters who are career teachers as well as her parents who also served as principals. As a widow, Doris has one daughter, Katrina, who is married and also lives in Jackson. She has had ties to Jackson for many years, and became very attentive and familiar with the Vision 2020 process. She feels her passion and her calling is local public education.

 

Doris received her undergraduate degree in education from the University of  Arkansas, a Masters Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies in Curriculum and Instruction from National Louis University and other specialty training from the University of Wisconsin and Marquette University. At one time, Doris also had the distinction of serving as Special Program Coordinator for the Pre-College division at the University of Wisconsin.

Jackson-Madison County School System product AJ Massey has established deep roots in West Tennessee. The son of a JMCSS teacher and coach, AJ graduated from Jackson Central-Merry High School where he received “the highest form of education in both academics and life.” AJ played football at the University of Mississippi and later received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Union University. AJ worked for Northwestern Mutual before beginning his banking career at Regions Bank, later at Leaders Credit Union, and currently in a Vice Presidents role at The Bank of Jackson. He received his Masters of Business Administration from Union University in May 2014.

 

AJ is an alumnus of the Leadership Jackson class of 2009 and was awarded the COPE Award in 2015 followed by the Distinguished Leadership Award from the Association of Leadership Programs. AJ was named one of Jackson’s Finest Young Professionals by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in 2011 and was recognized in the first class of The Jackson Sun’s Forty Under 40. He is an active member of the Exchange Club and Jackson Young Professionals.

 

He serves on the board of directors for Madison County CASA, The Exchange Club Carl Perkins Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse, and The Boys and Girls Club of Jackson. He is a founding member of the Boys-To-Men mentoring program at Arlington Elementary. He is a deacon and active member of Englewood Baptist Church. When he is not serving his clients and his community, AJ enjoys fishing, woodworking, reading, and cheering on the Cubs and Rebels. AJ has been married to Lauren, his middle school sweetheart, for 13 years. They have a son, Brooks, and a rescue Springer Spaniel, Millie.

Morris was elected to the School Board on August 4, 2018.  He served as an administrator in the JMCSS for 23 years before retiring in 2007 but returned to serve as a substitute teacher for over  five years.  In 2014, he wrote a book, entitled Enough is Enough, Public Education Has Spiraled Out Of Control.  He has one daughter, Miranda Bond who serves as office manager at Bell Elementary School. He has two grandchildren, Erin Brookshire and Anthony Jordan, a journalism and communication major at Middle Tennessee State. 

 

Morris is a lifelong resident of Jackson and was among the first twelve that intergrated Jackson Madison County School System. 

 

Active in community affairs.  Merriweather has served on numerous boards and commissions for the State of Tennessee. He is the recipient of numerous awards & citations recognizing his many accomplishments as an educator and community leader.

 

Some of the awards include, Who’s Who in America twice, Black Heritage Award for Service  To Youth in 1990, Gospel On The Move  Award as an educator, an author and humanitarian 2015, KIX 96 -Community Image Award for outstanding service to the Community of West TN & others.

 

Merriweather is a member of New St. Luke Baptist Church.
