Music

The Power of Music Education

Music education builds creativity, confidence, and teamwork while enhancing academic performance and emotional well-being. It provides students with a powerful outlet for self-expression and cultural awareness. Through music, students gain lifelong skills that enrich their education and personal growth, shaping them into well-rounded, successful individuals. 🎶

High

Students in grades nine through twelve have several music related fine arts programs from which to choose. The courses offered vary by school but include piano 1 and 2, general music/music appreciation, beginning band, concert band, marching band, jazz band, beginning choir, advanced choir, women’s choir, gospel choir and AP music appreciation for college credit. These classes are taught by certified and highly qualified music specialists. The goal at the high school level is to give many opportunities for performing ensembles through concerts, participation in honor band/choir auditions and events, participation in choral and band concert festival events, performing at many school related events and programs, performing at marching band competitions/football games, performing at community events, and performing in districtwide programs and events. Many of our high school band and choir programs are high achieving/award-winning programs in the West TN area.

Middle

Students in sixth through eighth grades can choose either band or choir as a fine arts activity choice in their activity rotation. These classes are taught by certified and highly qualified music specialists. The goal at the middle school level is to begin the performance process of musical experiences through performing concerts, participating in honor choir/band auditions and events, participating in choral and band concert festival events, and performing at various school related and district programs.

Elementary

Every student in Pre-K through fifth grade receives music instruction from a certified and highly qualified music specialist during their activity rotation. The goal at the elementary level is to foster a love of and interest in music. Students explore music from around the world and many time periods. They will perform and create music, learn to respond to music, and make meaningful connections with music. Various music programs and performances occur at each elementary school, and elementary students also perform in districtwide programs.

Visual Arts

The Power of Visual Arts Education

Visual arts education sparks creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills that support success in all subjects. It strengthens fine motor skills, boosts confidence, and fosters self-expression. Art also encourages cultural awareness and collaboration, helping students appreciate diverse perspectives while developing a deeper connection to the world around them. 🎨

High

High school art students can take Art I, Art II, Art III, and Art IV, as well as advanced art classes. These classes cover a wide range of creative expression, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, digital art, and design, while also exploring art history, theory, and critical analysis. Students will experience hands-on project-based lessons that introduce various types of media. Students in advanced classes are working independently to revise and finalize their portfolios. They have opportunities to experience media and materials they have not used before to curate a collection of personal artworks for display at an art show or event.

Middle

Students on the middle school level are planning, creating, and displaying art to inform their peers on social issues. They are refining the skills learned in elementary school and realizing the art media in which they are most interested. Students are learning how to make connections between art and other life experiences, including their studies of other school subjects like reading, math, science, and social studies.

Elementary

All students in Pre-K through fifth grade receive art classes from highly trained art teachers during their activity rotation. Students at this age are introduced to various materials and art-making approaches, the elements of art, are introduced to famous artists, and learn about art from around the world. Elementary art teachers display student artworks throughout the schools and host art shows at the schools.

Theater

The Impact of Theater Education

Theater education builds confidence, creativity, and communication skills while fostering teamwork and problem-solving. Students develop adaptability and empathy as they bring stories to life on stage. These experiences not only enhance personal growth but also prepare students for success in a variety of future careers. 🎭

Middle

High

Students will have the opportunity to take Theatre I, Theatre II, Theatre III, and Theatre IV. These classes cover a wide range of topics including acting techniques, script analysis, stagecraft, and performance skills, culminating in student productions. Students will study playwriting and technical theatre, and learn the techniques behind making costumes, building sets, and the proper usage of lighting and sound equipment.

Dance

The Power of Dance Education

Dance education immerses students in styles like hip-hop, jazz, ballet, and more, fostering creativity, discipline, and self-expression. It enhances coordination, endurance, and confidence while reducing stress and promoting well-being. Through performance and teamwork, students gain lifelong skills and an appreciation for the arts. JMCSS Districtwide Fine Arts Events

Each year, the district proudly highlights its outstanding fine arts programs through a series of signature events designed to showcase the incredible talents of our students. These recurring performances, exhibitions, and showcases provide students with valuable opportunities to display their artistic growth in music, theater, visual arts, and dance. From districtwide concerts and art displays to theatrical productions and collaborative performances, these events celebrate creativity, dedication, and the transformative power of the arts.

Art at the Downs

This vibrant spring event highlights the outstanding artistic talents of students from Pre-K through 12th grade across the district. Families, community members, and district employees come together to celebrate student creativity, admire a diverse collection of artwork, and even purchase select pieces to bring home as a lasting tribute to the students' artistic achievements.

JMCSS Districtwide Play

Students from across the district have the exciting opportunity to audition for and participate in a districtwide production, bringing together talent from multiple schools for a unified annual performance. Plays for high school students and K-8 students alternate each year, allowing performers of all ages to showcase their skills and collaborate in a shared theatrical experience.

Tennessee Tour

Exceptional senior students from every fine arts program are nominated by their teachers for meeting criteria within their respective programs. These students take an all-expense paid field trip to fine arts related museums and shows during the spring semester for the outstanding achievements in their selected fine arts areas.

JMCSS Winter Elementary Art and Music Showcase

Held at Liberty Technology High School, the Winter Showcase is a vibrant celebration of creativity and talent, featuring exceptional artwork and musical performances from elementary schools across the district. This special event provides young artists and musicians with the opportunity to display their hard work and skills, fostering confidence and a love for the arts.

Spring Showcase

Each spring, the community is invited to experience the incredible talents of our students during this special event. Schools across all grade levels come together to showcase their musical performances and diverse artistic creations at the Old Hickory Mall. Throughout the day, visitors can enjoy a variety of musical selections and view an impressive display of student artwork, celebrating the creativity and dedication of our young artists and musicians.
