This October marks the 10th anniversary of the School Health Clinic which is a collaborative effort between Jackson Madison County Schools and West Tennessee Healthcare. This school-based health clinic opened in October 2009 and was the first one of its kind in this area. The clinic is located inside Jackson Careers and Technology School at 668 Lexington Ave. Our main goal is to help children and faculty stay healthy and in the classroom. The clinic provides minor, immediate medical care to the students and staff in the district. It is our desire to complement a family’s healthcare and not replace their primary care physician or provider. The clinic is staffed with a full-time nurse practitioner. The services include acute care for illnesses, school and sports physicals, and immunizations. The School Health Clinic is another example of JMCSS and WTHC working together to create a healthier community one student at a time.
There has been a long-standing partnership between WTHC and JMCSS dating back to 1998 with the implementation of school nurses in the schools. Data shows that when a child visits the school nurse the return to class ratio is much higher than without a nurse on site. This has a positive impact on the student’s education.
WTHC also provides athletic trainers for our student athletes through Sports Plus. We know our students are healthier, more prepared to learn and safer when they are participating in sports thanks to the support and services provided by WTHC. Through these collaborative efforts, thousands of students and staff have been served for their healthcare needs. We look forward to many more years creating a healthier community one student at a time.
