Outstanding Growth Scores for Jackson-Madison County's Earliest Learners

JACKSON, TN – Every year JMCSS teachers use the state portfolio system to measure the growth they make with their students. The 2018-19 portfolio scores indicate that all of JMCSS’s Pre-K, Kindergarten, and First Grade teachers met or exceeded the amount of growth expected for their students. “The outstanding growth scores of our Pre-K, Kindergarten, and First-grade teachers is a direct result of the hard work they do every day. I am fortunate that I get to be in these classes often and see the positive impact they are making on students' lives. I am so proud of them,” said Mary Myers, JMCSS’s Leader of Early Foundations.

 

The portfolio system started several years ago with Fine Arts teachers and has progressed over the last few years to include early grades. The purpose of the portfolio is to provide a way for individual teachers in traditionally non-tested grades/subjects to show how they are impacting their students. Teachers collect student work throughout the year in alignment with state standards and upload them to the portfolio system, Portfolium. Then, peer reviewers from across the state score portfolios based on the standards for each grade level.

 

“While the district provides curriculum, a framework, and ongoing support for portfolio collections,” stated Rachel Scott, JMCSS’s Leader of Professional Development, “it is ultimately the teachers who are able to take those items and use them to implement strong lessons that lead to student success and build a strong foundation for their future learning.”
