JACKSON, Tenn. - South Side and Liberty Tech football fans are hoping that the third year of the Madison County Commissioner’s Cup rivalry series is unlike the previous years. That’s because North Side High School won the county football championship in 2018 and in 2019.
The Tribe will attempt to make it a three-peat beginning with a homecoming matchup against Liberty on Friday at 7 p.m.
Jackson’s Big Three have struggled a bit after the COVID-19 pandemic hampered each team’s preseason preparation and caused the start of the season to be delayed. Contests over the next four weeks will determine the county championship and seeding for the postseason. North Side, Liberty, and South Side compete in Class 4A Region 6. Only the top four region teams will earn a spot in the playoffs. The winner of the North Side vs. Liberty matchup will earn a region win. Meanwhile South Side travels to Lexington on Friday with an opportunity to earn their second region win.
The Madison County Commissioner’s Cup was started in 2018 as an effort to spur civic pride, education, and awareness. Additionally, each school represents a department of our local law enforcement/emergency response teams. The Jackson Police Department’s name has appeared on the trophy twice because North Side High School represents JPD in this series.
