  • Music at Thelma Barker

My name is Stephen Watson, and I have the privilege of teaching music at Thelma Barker Elementary. I have 17 years of teaching experience. I received my Bachelor of Music degree as well as my teaching endorsement from the University of Tennessee at Martin and a Masters in Music from the University of Memphis. Music has always been a part of my life, and it has brought me so much joy throughout my life. I just want to share my love for music with my students in hopes that they will carry on that love in their life as well. In music class we learn the basic fundamentals of music such as rhythm, melody, harmony, form, and connections to other disciplines. We learn how to put together a performance and refine that performance for a concert. I also like to expose students to different styles of music, whether old or new styles, as well as teach them new instruments and how to become proficient in playing those instruments. We explore the historical context of pieces of music in order to truly appreciate the musical compositions. We host at least two performances per year and also participate in district wide fine arts events. Every other year we put together a major production, which is an audition performance. Last year we did Aladdin at the Ned. I look forward to an amazing year!
