Overview Information

  • Music at Thelma Barker

All students at Barker have music class once every 2 weeks, in their homeroom class for 55 minutes with Mrs. Allison Lewis. Mrs. Lewis is in her 2nd year at Barker and 7th year teaching elementary music. Mrs. Lewis has the best job in the school because she gets to know all the students year after year and she gets to sing and make music every day. Students sing, play instruments, move/dance, listen to, write music, analyze and play games in order to learn and experience more about music through a variety of different styles and methods. Music classes are designed to be fun and educational for all students to increase appreciation, basic knowledge and skills of music.

Students do receive a grade in music class that is reported as either an S, “Satisfactory” or an N, “Needs improvement.” The S or N grade is based on a percentage grade for participation and in class assignments during music class. Students who are trying their best and making improvements, no matter their natural music ability, will receive an S on their report card, which is anything above 65%. 3rd-5th grade will sometimes complete assignments and quizzes during class that will affect their overall average based on achievement of specific music goals.
